Diploma Title: WEB DESIGNER AND DEVELOPER

Program length: 25 weeks (625 hours)

Become a Website Designer and Developer. Learn the high-tech skills and current technology that will help you achieve a professional career in Web development that you have always wanted. The demand for website designers is high, and requires specialized skills to create unique Web pages. Many businesses, small and large, contract web designers to make their website operational.

Leonardo College of Design offers a comprehensive program which will prepare students for this challenging and creative new career. Our program incorporates various disciplines of design and technical fields: visual communication, graphic design, information technology and content writing. These in turn assists the designer in creating an effective user interface and an efficient website infrastructure.

Median $46,000 per year ($34,000 to $66,000 depending on background and experience) (2013 statistics).

Admission requirements:

Ontario Secondary School Diploma (or equivalent) or Mature Student (19 years of age or older and out of school for at least 1 year) and basic knowledge of computers (test required). People under Employment Insurance, W.S.I.B. and other assistance programs are welcome.

Course title: Adobe Photoshop
Course length in hours: 75

This course provides the basic knowledge and applications of Adobe Photoshop. Students will be introduced to the elements of digital graphic design through an image processing and manipulation context. Upon completion of the course, students will have an understanding of digital image properties and can apply the features of Photoshop to modify images as desired.

Course title: Adobe Illustrator
Course length in hours: 50
Prerequisites: Adobe Photoshop

This course provides the basic knowledge and application of Adobe Illustrator. Students will be introduced to the properties of digital graphic design through a vector based drawing application. This application is similar in operation to the popular Adobe Photoshop, however proves different in its intentions and usages. Knowledge gained in this course will allow students to create images, layout displays, and bring together multiple independent items into a final product with an efficient and professional purpose.

Course title: Adobe InDesig(Graphic Design Integration)
Course length in hours: 50
Prerequisites: Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator

This course provides the basic knowledge and application of Adobe InDesign. Material taught will introduce students to final product layout design and publishing. Student will gain knowledge in presentation preparation and layout design while using, applying and integrating the skills developed through Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. This course concludes the Graphic Design segment by incorporating all graphic design principles and concepts gained into a full project production.

Course title: Introduction to Web Design with HTML/CSS
Course length in hours: 75

Success in web design and development requires students to understand the basic knowledge of Web Design Programming. Students will be introduced to the World Wide Web and explore the fundamentals of web-design through HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets).

Course title: Adobe Dreamweaver
Course length in hours: 100

This course familiarizes students with the basic techniques used for creating professionally-crafted websites using the Adobe Dreamweaver application. It also provides the fundamental knowledge and techniques needed to advance to more complex operations for enhancing the functionality of websites. Students will create and manage database-driven websites.

Course title: Introduction to Programming /JavaScript
Course length in hours: 75

This subject is divided into two parts, beginning with an introduction to programming concepts that will provide students with the basis to syntax and basic scripting using JavaScript as a model. Part 1 will also focus on the logic of programming, good programming habits, program development/flow and design as well as basic de-bugging techniques which will prepare the student for other common programming languages (such as MySQL and PHP). Part 2 of this subject will move deeper into the JavaScript language, which is commonly used in Website development. Students will learn basic programming concepts of JavaScript and create interactivity using text and graphics.

Course title: Web Development with PHP
Course length in hours: 50
Prerequisites: JavaScript

PHP (PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor) is an open sourced embeddable server-side language which offers simple yet powerful applications that can be used on small websites to amplify complex web applications. This subject is meant to offer a basic knowledge in PHP that can be used in combination with other languages to enhance website development. The course will cover the structure and foundations of the language such as variables, arrays flow control and functions. Students will learn how to integrate the language to HTML environments.

Course title: Web Development with MySQL
Course length in hours: 50
Prerequisites: JavaScript

This course offers students a comprehensive overview of MySQL (My Structured Query Language) and SQL basics. Using Microsoft SQL Server, students will learn how to create and manipulate database objects including tables, indexes, views and triggers and will be able to install, run and create databases. MySQL is an open-source relational database that is widely used and quickly deployed on the Internet. It is a standard in small and medium sized businesses and is reliable, fast and affordable.

Course title: Web Development with FLASH
Course length in hours: 100

Adobe Flash is a program commonly used for animation on the web and is often found integrated in website design, especially for marketing purposes. Using lectures and various practical exercises students will learn the techniques associated with animation. This is both an introductory and intermediate course and will be going through the programming language of ActionScript within Flash.
